About Us

My name is Sherilyn Hanna, and I'm a native Southern California
girl, born and raised in Santa Monica. I've been working with
birds and animals all my life. Growing up, I was always looking
for a way to learn more, and be involved with the natural world
around me. I have been so fortunate to turn a passion into a
career, as well as making a difference. Feeding the wild birds
on my grandmas' front porch, critter-sitting exotics for the
science teacher on vacation, volunteering with the local animal
shelter and local wildlife rehab group, keeper-in-training class
at the Los Angeles Zoo in High School...all were a good start.
My first pet bird was a budgie, then a pair of cockatiels. My first
aviaries contained budgies, doves, cockatiel and quail. Then, in
1994, I found my first softbill, a Hartlaub Turaco. Wondering
what a Turaco was, I was on a quest to learn more, and this
opened the door to a world of working with birds! A year later, I
finally found a mate for my Turaco, and with the help of several
old-tymer aviculturists such as Gene Hall & Dale Thompson, I
succeeded in breeding them, learning to hand feed from day
one as well. Several species of softbills followed, along with
other birds such as lories. Soon after, I started to work with
Lynn Hall, a well known aviculturist breeding fruit doves and
pigeons, Suni antelope and Fennec Foxes. A few life changes, I
then had the opportunity to work with another well respected
aviculturist, Dick Schroeder. He immersed me further into the
world of lories and lorikeets, and other softbills such as mynahs
and hornbills. I then enjoyed a year as a senior keeper of birds
and foxes at the beautiful Santa Barbara Zoo. Being a single
mom and needing to be ever involved and watchful over my
teenage son Greg, I went back to work for Lynn Hall in 2002; I
also began working with his son, Hank Hall, of Junglebook
Lories. I currently manage Lynns' large collection of fruit doves
and pigeons full time, and have acquired all permits taking over
the Fennec Fox breeding program. Due to the untimely passing
of Hank in 2006, I acquired the majority of his lory collection, and
are continuing the Junglebook lines. In addition, I have my own
avian breeding facility. Today, I am working with several
species of birds and the fennec foxes, with an eye specifically
to conservation.
I am a member of Avicultural Society of America, Association of
Zoos and Aquariums, ; I am on the board of directors for the
American Lory Society, on the editorial committee for the
Zoological Association of America, and have the honor of being
Vice President and membership secretary for the Avicultural
Society of America. I work with several zoos and other breeders
with the fennec foxes and several species of birds. My hope is
to help educate and work with others with the goal of
conservation, as I propagate species I am working with, to help
the future survival of species in aviculture and zooculture!
