| Our basic diet Daily diet for our adult fennec foxes is as follows. We feed once daily in the late afternoon to early evening: Nature's Variety Prairie Chicken & Rice Dog Kibble, slightly soaked, or Science Diet Nature's Best Chicken and Brown Rice Dog Kibble (or a combination of these two) Fancy Feast Grilled Chicken, Turkey or Beef in gravy canned cat food Thawed frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, green beans, limas) For each animal, we use approximately ¼ cup dog kibble, slightly soaked; mixed with 1-2 heaping Tbsp canned cat food; 1/4 cup thawed frozen veggies…sometimes we will substitute the diced fruit and rice mix we feed to the fruit doves, without the raisins. Remember this is only a guideline, as each fennec will be different just as you & I are, and the daily intake amounts can vary based on activity, age, ambient temperature, etc. We also add 1/8 tsp of Vionate vitamins to the dog/cat food mix 3 times per week per animal. They do enjoy and receive mealworms and mice, as well as occasional treats. They always have fresh water available at all times, and have dry kibble offered free choice as well, especially when the females are pregnant. We also provide the nursing moms an additional serving of the canned cat food or other protein source along with the veggies, given in the morning. This helps ensure that she has access to enough proper nutrition for her nursing kits. Fennec foxes do have a tendency to become overweight quickly if not fed properly, and a fat fennec is not a healthy fennec! They do have a sweet tooth, so be very careful when giving treats; also watch as they may eat other pets' food if available. Fennecs are considered omnivores, and we have found that they should be fed as such. They are not strict carnivores, and feeding them this way leads to many health issues down the road. Terrible fur condition, bad smell, lack of breeding, organ failure, and short life span are just some of the problems that have been encountered over the years when fed only meat. Feeding table scraps and junk is not healthy either! There is some controversy regarding their being considered omnivores within the carnivore category. Consider that the fennec fox is a desert animal, and its system is specifically designed to get most if not all moisture requirements from its diet. As they are typically fed a dry kibble as part of their diet in captivity, we have found that the addition of the small amount of vegetables has made the huge difference in breeding success, health and longevity. We are not saying they don't eat meat, but that they eat both animal and plant matter. The above is just a very basic guide to diet to give you a little insight in to their requirements and care. There is certainly much more to it in maintaining fennec foxes successfully. There is no substitute for experience, so feel free to contact us with questions. We are always happy to help and give guidance!
